Abstract

The microhardness of heat-treated photochromic glasses has been measured. The H v number changes greatly with the time of heat treatment. The results are discussed considering the precipitation of silver colloid particles Ag □ and the formation of BO 4 − tetrahedra in alkali-rich borate droplets formed when the glass is heat-treated. It is deduced that the known relation between the viscosity and hardness of glass is valid only for monophase glasses and not for glasses with phase separation.
