Abstract
This work aims to investigate the effect of the oxygen plasma over the hardness, crystallinity, surface chemistry and structural composition of Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) at different times of treatment. The contact angle test was performed to observe the wettability of the material. The crystallinity and crystal size of UHMWPE treated with plasma were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hardness of the material increased by 70% after 10 min of treatment and subsequently decreased after 20 min of treatment back to the initial microhardness. The increase in the microhardness is caused by the crosslinking of the polymer, which is corroborated by Raman spectroscopic observations.
