Abstract

A case of pericardial effusion in which cytologic examination revealed numerous sheathed microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti is described. The patient had no symptoms suggestive of filarial infection in the past. Following antifilarial therapy, the effusion resolved and the patient became asymptomatic. The possible etiologic role of the microfilariae in the genesis of the effusion is discussed.
