Abstract

The present paper concerns the reconstruction of microevolutionary processes occurring in various biological properties of human groups together with an attempt at a description of mechanisms directing these processes, with special attention paid to natural selection as the main factor responsible for biological adaptation of human populations to both natural and cultural components of man's environment. The material for this study consists of data on skeletal samples originating from prehistoric and historic cemeteries excavated in Europe. Considered in the present study is information comprising mainly two sets of characteristics of human groups: morphology with respect to its inter- and intrapopulational variability, and mortality structure.
