Abstract

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and cellulose were reacted in the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmiAc). Side reactions between the EmiAc and each reactant were prevalent, but use of water as the coagulating solvent produced microencapsulated POSS in cellulose. Effects of cellulose sources, POSS reactive groups, NaOH pretreatment of cellulose, and regenerating solvent were examined using elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and thermogravimetric analysis. POSS - cellulose products had good thermal stability and a high char yield. The high char yield indicates that the cellulose encapsulated POSS may be usable as a carbonization agent in intumescent flame retardant formulations.
