Abstract

The paper reports near-selective nitration of phenol to ortho -nitrophenol using a suitably prepared microemulsion solution in the presence of dilute nitric acid. The case example indicates that microemulsions, besides enhancing the reaction rates, can also be selective to give the desired product. Microemulsion solution also affords the use of dilute acid as a nitrating agent.
