Abstract

A micromethod for the determination of the amine oxide group in organic compounds is described. It is based on the reduction with an excess of titanium(III) reagent at pH 5–6, which is quantitative at room temperature within 5 min. Excess titanium(III) is back-titrated with iron(III) solution. The accuracy is about ±0.5%. Amine oxide and nitro groups are determined together. An assembly for the preparation and storage of the titanium(III) solution is also described.
