Abstract

The use of microcontrollers and sensors in today's world has enabled exploration of several areas by applying this technology. One such area involves monitoring the environment in farming. An aspect of farming practiced is poultry farming which require strict monitoring and control. Poultry production is affected by temperature and lighting variations, which if not monitored and controlled, would affect the production. This work is envisaged to monitor and control the environment in poultry farming. The system incorporates an Atmel 32 bit ARM microcontroller and sensors to monitor and control temperature and light. The sensor readings processed by the microcontroller program are analyzed by a MATLAB server program, which in turn communicates with an embedded server in a wireless energy gateway. The embedded server then communicates with other sensor terminals that control appliances regulating the environment. The proposed system illustrates the capability of a chosen microcontroller for use in other applications.
