Abstract

Practitioners of the individual technologies of simulation, expert systems, and interactive training may have noticed that the end users in industry do not necessarily know how these disciplines differ from each other. End users also have budget constraints that often preclude purchase of multiple high-technology applications. The solution seems to be a microcomputer-based system with elements of simulation, features of expert systems, and characteristics of interactive training devices. Therefore, emerging industrial applications tend to be hybrids. The important engineering challenge in these new systems is to assure that the appropriate characteristics of each type of technology are incorporated and interfaced to assure that the end result operates seamlessly and suits the intended application.
