Abstract

The heat production in resting platelets of 12 patients with prosthetic heart valves was found to be significantly decreased ( p < 0.005), P = 49 ± 9 fW/cell. In a matched control group of eight patients with heart valve disease, the corresponding heat production value in resting platelets was P = 65 ± 11 fW/cell. The present results indicate that the overall metabolic activity in platelets of patients with prosthetic heart valves is abnormally low.
