Abstract

A microbiological method has been devised for the synthesis of C 14-uniformly labeled l(+)- and d(−)-lactic acids. The antipodes were isolated as the zinc salts and were characterized by water of crystallization; optical rotation; elemental analysis of carbon, hydrogen, and ash; and homogeneity by paper chromatography. Free lactic acid for use in metabolic studies was prepared by passing a solution of zinc lactate through Dowex-50.
