Abstract
The relations between the microbending losses and the mode field halfwidth (MFHW) W/sub x1/, W/sub y1/ based on the nearfield second moment (NFSM) for arbitrary symmetric noncircular weakly guiding single-mode fibers are derived. which can be reduced to the known result for circular-symmetric single-mode fibers.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
