Abstract
Nucleic acid detection technology is revolutionizing microbiological diagnostic testing. With the exception of infectious prion proteins, all pathogenic microbes contain DNA and / or RNA and are thus targets for nucleic acid-based testing. Some clinical microbiology laboratories are largely shifting to nucleic acid testing, which is particularly useful for detecting slow-growing or unculturable organisms such as viruses, mycobacteria, and fastidious bacterial pathogens. However, significant challenges remain before this technology can be applied universally in clinical laboratories.
