Abstract

The crystal structures of zirconia have been widely studied in relation to its transformation toughening and ionic conduction properties. The system of zirconia stabilised with Y2O3 is important in both applications. This investigation concerns the observation of unexpected crystallographic features in a fine-grained 2.3 mol% Y2O3 composition. This material is an example of the mechanically-outstanding “tetragonal zirconia polycrystals” (TZP) materials, in which virtually all of the ZrO2 is believed to be retained in the crucial tetragonal phase.
