Abstract

The objective of this research was to conduct a microabrasion test of chrome electrodeposited over a surface of titanium. For this purpose, uncoated and coated specimens with chrome were manufacture. The surface was characterized using a test machine Plint TE 66. The slip distance in this test was 39.89 m. The micro-abrasive wear resistance was carried out using 4 µm SiC in average diluted in distilled water. The loss material volume (V), the wear coefficient (K) and wear rate (Q) were obtained. Specifically, for the uncoated and coated specimens, the loss material volume was 0.00406109 (Ti) mm3 and 0.00150886 (Ti/Cr) mm3. The wear coefficient k was 0.000407144 (Ti) mm3/Nm and 0.0001512700 (Ti/Cr) mm3/Nm. The wear rate was 0.0001018 (Ti) mm3/m and 0.00003782 (Ti/Cr) mm3/m. Wear scars were fully characterized taking optical and SEM images identifying the wear mechanisms of three body rolling micro-abrasion. The results showed that the uncoated specimens had a lower micro-abrasion resistance than those which were coated with chromium. Such coating increased the hardness and allowed more and better sliding of the abrasive particles. The wear coefficient k of the coated specimens was reduced more than 50%, in comparison with its substrate of titanium.
