Abstract

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is primarily caused by organisms that migrate along the external surface of the catheter shaft from the urethral meatus to the bladder. Device modification strategy for prevention of CAUTI has relied upon antimicrobial agents to prevent bacterial colonization on the catheter surface. However, this approach introduces risks for antimicrobial resistance that can make infections difficult to treat. The current study presents a unique non-kill, physical surface modification for inhibiting bacterial migration without the use of antimicrobial agents.
