Abstract
We present a novel method for the in-line measurement of the diameter of image-transmitting optical fibres. The continuously drawn fibre is illuminated by two laser beams at near-perpendicular incidence and the changes in the back-scattered intensity are detected and electronically processed to yield the change in diameter with an accuracy of 0.1 μm.
