Abstract

The potential of micro and surface analysis for environmental studies is discussed. It is shown that these techniques can be used successfully for characterization of air pollution and its effect on man and materials. The possibilities, limitations and significance of the characterization of airborne particles in terms of morphology, elemental composition, speciation and surface enrichment of anthropogenic substances are treated as well as the impact of asbestos pollution on human health and atmospheric acidity on building materials like marble, sandstone, concrete and glass.
