Abstract

1117 As a tribute to Michael Pollock, clinically applicable research of this visionary practical scientist will be presented. After an early discussion of his academic background and formative experiences (PR) his landmark studies in exercise training of the mature population (HM) will be presented. These, and other scientific contributions and his leadership role applicable to the field of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation will be discussed (BF). Dr. Pollock's approach and investigation of the controversial use of resistance training in patients with cardiopulmonary and other clinical problems has led to the universal acceptance of these methods of exercise (MF). His publications and guidelines addressing the appropriate exercise in adult population and the future of research in this field as seen through the eyes of his colleagues will be presented (JW). A panel discussion with audience participation will follow the presentations. A tribute to the man and the presentation of the practical and applicable contributions from numerous landmark studies and literary contributions will make this symposium of interest to all in the fields of rehabilitation and adult fitness.
