Abstract

ABSTRACT The micellar solution of two cationic surfactants cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (CTAB) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) mixtures was investigated. Their miscibility was determined by measuring the surface tension of the aqueous solution of the mixtures at variable composition. Results indicated a decrease in the critical micelle concentration (cmc) value of the mixtures with increasing mole fraction of CTAB. The results also indicated that CTAB and TTAB molecules mix slightly nonideally in the micelle at lower mole fraction of CTAB. In addition, the rate of change of the cmc value is nearer to the cmc value of the longer hydrocarbon chain molecule (CTAB). Therefore, it was concluded that the longer hydrophobic group of CTAB is geometrically favorable for the micelle formation.
