Abstract
This paper presents the effect of methanol (MeOH) on the micellization of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) containing different concentrations of Furosemide (cardiovascular drug). Taking into account the advantages of surfactant micelles as carriers, the influence of Furosemide on CTAB micellar system has been studied in methanol–water mixtures. The physico-chemical interactions between drug and surfactant were characterized by using conductometric as well as the density and speed of sound measurements. From these experimental measurements, the critical micelle concentration (CMC), standard Gibbs energy (ΔGmo), enthalpy (ΔHmo), entropy (ΔGmo) of micellization, apparent molar volume (ϕv) and apparent molar adiabatic compressibility (ϕk) have been calculated. The micellization of CTAB in water–methanol–drug medium has been found to depend on nature as well as the concentration of Furosemide. The critical micelle concentration values tend to decrease with increase in Furosemide content. The tendency of alcohols to modify solvent structure and penetration of drug into the micelles has been used to interpret their effects on micellization of CTAB.
