Abstract
In this study, a multi-input converter (MIC)-based module-level approach for harvesting maximum power in a photovoltaic system during partial shading is proposed. The MIC topology has a dedicated switch in series with each module to operate it at its maximum power point (MPP). Each module is independent of the other and achieves their respective MPP's under respective operating conditions. The MIC topology can also withstand open-circuit and module mismatch conditions. The proposed system offers simplicity in design, flexibility in control and reliability in operation with low-component count (number of switches and passive elements) consequently reduces the size, cost and complexity of the system. The complete system is comprehensively analysed for a standalone system under randomly selected conditions and is validated both by simulation studies in the MATLAB environment and exhaustive experimental studies on a laboratory prototype.
