Abstract

The authors performed a retrospective review of paediatric patients under 10 years of age with sickle cell disease (SCD) and recurrent abdominal pain (RAP). They identified 12 out of 75 children with RAP secondary to gallstones (10 of which were boys) between August 2001 and March 2004 with a mean age of 7.8 years. Prior to surgery anaemia was corrected to reduce the HbS level to less than 30%.
