Abstract
Psychoanalytic interpretation of art: possibilities and problems In the first part of this paper, the author traces Freud's reflections on art, artists and art interpretation mainly on the basis of his publications. It becomes clear that Freud's interest in art - with all its ambivalence - was intended to confirm the ideas and theories which he had gained from his psychoanalytic case studies. An important exception which paved the way for further development is to be found in his reflections on »Moses of Michelangelo«. The paper takes a critical look at Freud's ideas and uses these as a starting point for understanding further developments in art interpretation.
