Abstract

This paper reports on changes in population density with distance from city centre as measured by the negative exponential function for 20 Canadian metropolitan areas during 1941 to 1976. Two-point estimation is used to determine the negative exponential function from available published statistics and maps....Two important aspects of urban population change in Canada are documented. First central city population densities have consistently declined during 1941 to 1976 with no indication of cessation in the declines....Second populations have continued to spread out or deconcentrate during this period. Deconcentration becomes stronger over time and especially characterizes the larger population centres. (summary in FRE) (EXCERPT)
