Abstract
ABSTRACTThis article discusses Carlo Lizzani's Banditi a Milano/Bandits in Milan/The Violent Four (1968), a portrayal of the infamous Cavallero gang, their initial political frustration and, above all, their chronological evolution that underlines the influence of capitalist values and strategies in turning proletarian rebels into ‘managers’ of violent criminal organizations. In particular, it will be discussed the way in which the film reflects the escalation of criminal violence and the increasingly systematic organization and efficiency of criminals as a consequence of their greed for money and success in the post-economic miracle period of Italian society. Particular attention will be paid to the viewer's engagement with the scenarios and the fictional characters portrayed in the film.
