Abstract

This presentation shows why there is an increasing need to address traceability whenmeasurement methods are developed. Specific examples outside medical ultrasound aregiven, indicating the limitations of methodologies adopted in the past and the need to change inthe future. In medical ultrasound, current and past test methods are reviewed from imagingperformance, acoustic output measurements and safety. Whilst many methods are appropriatefor limited application, with the increasing need to secure funding and continuity, research anddevelopment based on methods which can be accepted and implemented widely is more likely toreceive favoured support. The key conclusion is the need in the future for greater emphasis onspecification in terms of traceable quantities.
