Abstract
THE readers of the article by Mrs. Anderton and P. H. Bigg on ‘The Yard Unit of Length’1 may be interested in the results of an investigation following a discussion on metric to inch conversion. The definition of the yard, 0.9144 m exactly, legalized by the Weights and Measures Act, 1963, is equivalent to 1 in. = 25.4 mm exactly. The reciprocal, 1 mm = 1/25.4 in. equals 0.039 370 078 740 157 … and we were interested in the way that the first group of figures 3937 was doubled to form the next group 7874 and looked as if it would be doubled again to give 157 ….
