Abstract

This study was performed to determine the formative power and sustainability of the permanent wave when methyl sulfonyl methane(MSM) is used as a intermediate processing. The findings are below; First, as for the changes in hair thickness, control group VP (0%MSM) was at 0.092±0.008 mm. VP-S1 (1% MSM) appeared to be increased 3.3% than VP, VP-S5 (5% MSM) 6.5%, VP-S10 (10%MSM) 7.6%, VP-S15 (15% MSM) 8.7% and VP-S20 (20% MSM) 11.9%. As the concentration of the intermediate processing MSM increases, the hair gets thicker. Second, in the tensile strength test, as the rate of the MSM increased 20% the tensile strength of the hair decreased 22.4%. Third, the results of density analysis by methylene blue dye, discharge rate of methylene blue decreased with increasing the amount of MSM. At adding 20% more of MSM shows highest level of the hair density (40.8%). Fourth, the result was that VP-S20 experimental group showed great effects maintaining the forming power and sustainability of wave compared to the VP control group. Therefore, according to the ability of MSM`s performance, the thickness and density of hair went higher and the forming power and sustainable power of wave got better and the surface became smoother. But the tensile strength went down. It seemed that MSM doesn`t combine with hair and two oxygens of MSM combines with hydrogen in protein of hair.
