Abstract

The methylation of toluene with synthesis gas on composite catalysts containing Zn-Cr oxide with methanol synthesis activity and ZSM-5 zeolite with alkylation activity was carried out at 30 atm. The efficiency of methanol, formed in the catalyst bed, as an alkylating agent was extremely high compared with that in the case of the conventional methylation with methanol. However, the composite catalysts containing ZSM-5 zeolite modified with the oxide of Mg or B did not exhibit the shape selectivity to produce p-xylene selectively.
