Abstract

Methods were developed for selective staining of polyacrylamide gels for -SH groups and cadmium contained in separated proteins. Staining for -SH groups is based on a reaction with 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) with a detection limit of 10 nmol per protein band. Cadmium is stained with dipyridyl-ferrous iodide with a detection limit of about 1 μg per protein band. Both these methods can be used for a rough estimation of -SH groups and cadmium in gel-separated proteins.
