Abstract

UNTIL quite recently the most popular method of feeding turkeys has been a free-choice system wherein the turkeys are allowed to balance their own diet with continuous access to a protein-vitamin-mineral concentrate and whole grains. Some modification of this method has been practiced by limiting one or the other component when over-consumption of either energy or protein occurs. The idea has been advanced recently that the turkey either cannot or will not balance its own diet properly when given such a choice. Proponents of all-mash feeding insist that when all of the components are mixed in a prescribed ratio, scaled to the changing requirement of the turkey throughout its growing period, growth rate and feed efficiency are improved and market age is decreased.Blaylock et al.
