Abstract

The article analyzes the main methods for obtaining transparent polycrystalline ceramics from Al 2 O 3 : hot pressing, hot isostatic pressing and spark plasma sintering (SPS). To obtain transparent polycrystalline Al 2 O 3 , a high- purity α-Al 2 O 3 powder with a nano- or submicron particle size and a narrow size distribution is used as a starting material. The best optical and mechanical results can be obtained by multistage sintering with the final stage of hot isostatic pressing. In addition, the quality of Al2O3 ceramics is improved by sintering additives MgO, Y 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , ZrO 2 .
