Abstract

Soil degradation is a reduction in the ability of a soil to produce food, fiber or feed of sufficient quality and quantity or to maintain a desired ecosystem (Pierzynski et al., 1994). Soil chemical or physical changes that reduce soil quality are considered degradation. Soil chemical or physical changes that result in the soil being a contaminant source for water, such as sediments or nutrients, also are considered soil degradation by some (Pierzynski et al., 1994).
