Abstract

Rail transport is the most virtuous mode of transportation but there are still 2500 rolling stocks that run on diesel. To contribute to France's objective of being carbon neutral by 2050, SNCF, the French national operator, has launched the AGC BEMU project to retrofit 5 dual-mode diesel-catenary trains into dual-mode catenary-battery trains, which will run on specific lines from 2024. In order to increase the relevance of battery-powered trains and promote their spreading, an economic optimum must be found between rolling stock, infrastructure, and operation. This paper presents the results of the analysis, using an innovative approach, of the relevance of battery-powered trains in France as a function of autonomy range. It highlights the existing territorial differences in France, which mainly depend on the electrification of the network and the railway operation.
