Abstract

A new methodology to distinguish between the damage mechanisms wear only and RCF crack initiation in combination with wear in rolling contacts is proposed in this work. The new methodology distinguishes between the damage mechanisms by comparing the experimental crack depth against a critical crack depth which is governed by the surface roughness and by the plastic shear deformation depth in the near-surface layer. The new methodology is used to assess the results of twin disc experiments that have been conducted with three pearlitic rail steels at different normal contact pressures and different longitudinal creep values. The observed experimental results show agreement with the criterion and the threshold of the new methodology.
