Abstract

The impact of watershed development programme was evaluated for four selected watersheds namely Kohinoor (B), Gangapur, Devarampalli and Goparajupalli in four districts, viz., Adilabad, Medak, Karimnagar and Warangal in Telangana State by computing different indices using the data on relevant variables for pre and post watershed development periods. Crop productivity increase in post-project period over pre-project ranged between 45% and 24% in Gangapur and Goparajupalli watersheds, respectively. Across watersheds, the value of income diversification index (IDI) was higher in Devarampalli (0.68) followed by Goparajupalli (0.65), Gangapur (0.60) and Kohinoor (B) (0.47). The value of livestock composition index showed zero in pre-project period while it varied from 0.05 to 0.14 in Kohinoor (B) and Gangapur watersheds in post-project period, respectively. Seasonal out-migration ratio ranged between 0.10 and 0.16 in Gangapur and Kohinoor (B) watersheds, respectively. The value of induced watershed eco index (IWEI) ranged between 11% and 37% in Kohinoor (B) and Gangapur watersheds, respectively as against 24% of overall four watersheds indicating additional area rejuvenated for biomass generation. The total impact of watershed development as reflected by various indicators, viz., CPI, IDI, IWEI and MPI studied across watersheds registered was maximum (76%) in Gangapur and minimum (21%) in Goparajupalli watershed.
