Abstract

The present study aimed to assess the potential of electricity generation and GHG emissions for a municipal solid waste landfill that is situated in Sivas, Turkey. The USEPA-LandGEM model was employed to determine the landfill gas generation capacity. The various internal combustion engines were selected in order to generate electricity by using the landfill biogas. The LCOE method was employed for calculating the electricity cost. The maximum total gas production rate was estimated to be 14.395 × 103 Mg for the year 2028. The total electricity generation for the Jenbacher JMS 208 gas engine was calculated as 40,760.28 MWh, while for the JMS 616 GS gas engine it was calculated as 15,1861.2 MWh. A variation between US $0.0695 and US $0.1132/kWh was found in the LCOE for the engines and discount rates. The results indicate that the investigated site has fair potential for electricity generation based on the landfill gas.
