This tutorial introduces the principles of the most common non-invasive methods of modern brain research which have been used in determining the neural functions underlying music perception. The methods described are electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG), positron emission tomography (PET), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In addition, evidence from brain-lesioned patients will be briefly illuminated.
