Abstract

Can the New Testament be applied to the present day? This forms the central consideration of this study. In search of an answer a number of present day approaches are referred to and criticized, such as a prescriptive approach; an ethical perspective of principles or ideals; as well as a relationally-responsibility model. Finally, the insights of Paul Ricoeur and Stanley Hauerwas are shown to have relevance for this issue. From this discussion six basic hermeneutical methodological principles emerge as essential for ascertaining the relevance of the New Testament for a new South Africa.
