Abstract

A heuristic study of the methodology used in a civic behavior study (Boggs, Rocco, & Spangler, 1995) examines how the authors merged data from literary and historical subjects with live interview transcripts, creating a triangulation of alternative data sources producing enriched insights during data analysis. Suggestions for incorporating unconventional data sources in social science research include consideration of selection issues and process, media choice, depth, context, and voice. In retrospect, the authors realized that only through combining the three data sources did they understand the progression of behaviors their subjects described.
