Abstract

How do Methodists account for their inclusive pastoral practices? Inspired by the Spirit, they seek to grow in Christ until they are able to love perfectly, embracing all. Although holy scripture apparently sets restrictions to that pastoral love, Methodists feel bound by new and contemporary experiences that stretch their understanding of God and of the human condition. When there is conflict between holy scripture and the Holy Spirit they tend to lean towards the Holy Spirit and present experiences. This leaves them without clear parameters. Conferring, debating, and holding divergent views in compassion and patience helps them to try to respond to present practices of marriage and its many alternatives.
