Abstract

A method for the absolute measurement of the total pair production cross section near threshold is presented. This method uses a pair spectrometer consisting of a Ge(Li) detector inserted inside an annular NaI(Tl) scintillator, the depletion layer of the Ge(Li) being the target. The incident beam of photons is produced by a collimated radioactive source. The efficiency of the spectrometer is determined as a function of energy (up to 3000 keV) by Monte Carlo calculations. A second method of absolute measurement is also presented for incident photons of energy ≳ 1500 keV, having an intensity sufficiently large with respect to the intensities of the other radiations of the source.
