Abstract

Adolescent psychiatric services differ considerably in terms of the patient groups they seek to address and in their modes of treatment (Health Advisory Service, 1986). The Prestwich Adolescent Unit is a general purpose, seven day, regional service for adolescent psychiatry, based in Salford Health Authority. Serving a population of 4½ million, it offers a mix of in-patient, day-patient, out-patient and consultation/liaison work, specialising in the treatment of mental illness.

  • Sexual abuse was known to be a feature in 39 cases (15%). While this may represent an underestimate of prevalence within the overall population, it is noteworthy that this was known to be a concern in only 4% of GP referrals, rising to 13% of child psychiatry referrals and as many as 30% of social service cases

SIMONGOWERSS, enior Lecturer in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Manchester; KENENTWISTLEN;ORMANCOOKEB; ELLAOKPALUGOa;nd ANNKENYONC, loughside School, Prestwich Hospital, Prestwich, Manchester M25 7BL. Adolescent psychiatric services differ considerably in terms of the patient groups they seek to address and in their modes of treatment (Health Advisory Service, 1986). The present study aimed to address the need to know more about the demographics of the patients referred and to enable us to consider whether we are providing the service we ought, to those we ought to treat. It ought to be clinically representative, to the extent that a psychiatric service might be expected to be managing cases with the sorts of mental illnesses which befall adolescents. The service ought to relate to the needs and desires of its referrers and their satisfaction with the management of referred patients. It seemed opportune to assess the extent to which they referred as they suggested they would like and the extent to which we appeared to respond
