Abstract

A simple method is demonstrated to significantly improve the typical apparatus currently used in optical Kerr effect measurements and, in particular, to facilitate the investigation of weakly anisotropic liquids. This modified version of the apparatus is highly sensitive and at the same time easy to handle. Additionally, it presents the advantage of reducing errors from absorption, divergence, and inaccurate coaxiality of both laser beams in the measuring cell.
