Abstract

A computer program was written in Microsoft BASIC to efficiently generate random coordinates for sampling insect populations in large field studies. Written for extension and research personnel, it requires no programming knowledge and is intended to be flexible enough to use with any field crop. This program generates a user-defined number of random sampling coordinates, within specified upper and lower limits, and arranges them so that the coordinate nearest to the most recently sampled point is sampled next (next nearest order). A field verification study confirmed that this program increased sampling efficiency more than 7-fold over that of nonordered random sampling.
