Abstract

As part of a program to measure acoustic properties of marine sediments in situ, a device has been developed to measure the acoustic impedance ρc of such sediments. With concurrent measurement of sound speed c, the bulk density ρ of relatively undisturbed sediments can be obtained. Acoustic impedance is obtained by measuring the electrical driving impedance at resonance of a small ceramic transducer element in contact with the medium. Relationship of the electrical impedance z to the acoustic impedance ρc as well as the effect of temperature on the measurement has been examined and will be reported.
