Abstract

Abstract A method for labeling red cells in vitro with DFP 32 with the use of near optimal dosage and subsequent storage at 4 ° C. for 20 hours is described. After transfusion of packed cells labeled simultaneously in vitro with DFP 32 and Cr 51 in a series of 10 patients, there was close agreement of the falloff of circulating red cell radioactivity of both isotopes. The method will permit red cell survival studies in the immediate posttrauma and intrasurgical period and also permit direct comparison of survival rates of 2 different populations of stored cells in the same recipients.
