Abstract

A method for efficiently subsampling high-boiling petroleum fractions is presented. The method is focused on optimizing the process for adequately subsampling a laboratory sample in order to obtain a representative test sample. The performance of the method is established by comparing the experimental uncertainty obtained during the determination of the asphaltene or the total petroleum hydrocarbons content in test samples (crude oil tank-bottom sediment and heavy crude oil) generated both with and without applying the presented method. The obtained results indicate that appropriate subsampling practices significantly reduce the uncertainty of experimental determinations and therefore appropriate attention should be devoted to them, especially during the study of highly heterogeneous matrixes.
