Abstract

Thanks for the interesting study entitled “Methionine sulfoximine, an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase, lowers brain glutamine and glutamate in a mouse model of ALS” [1]. It addressed the effect of an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase on the concentration of brain glutamate in an animal model. Methionine sulfoximine (MSO) is an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase (GS). Glutamate is condensed to glutamine by GS. Then, glutamate is synthesized from glutamine by glutaminase. The authors indicated that MSO decreased the levels of glutamate, glutamine, and GABA in the motor cortex and striatum [1].
